Two miraculous pregnancies within six months! And within the same family no less! What are the chances of this occurring by accident? While pregnancies are inherently miraculous, given that a brand-new person is developing within a mother’s womb, the incidents surrounding Elizabeth’s and Mary’s pregnancy were initiated by a divine purpose. While the world is watching, God’s carefully designed plan is now beginning to unfold.
What has always stuck with me is the fact that all throughout Bible history God is employing humans to help carry out His plan when He could have done it all by Himself. Jesus, for instance, could have just dropped onto the Earth as an adult, not unlike angels who have been appearing to humans on key occasions. Instead, God’s seed is dropped into a women’s womb to be born into a human family, the Son of God becoming a Son of Man.
In the New Testament Jesus refers to Himself as the Son of Man 99 times – a clear indicator that Jesus likes to call Himself the Son of Man; it also reveals that He fully identifies with the human plight. He is not just a messenger; He is a relative of ours! Related to Jesus, this introduces us into God’s family.
The Christmas miracle started out in a woman’s womb when God became a man. And the Christmas miracle also happens today when you and open our hearts and minds and believe. Paul explained in His letter to the Ephesians that Jesus, if invited, will reside in our hearts. Paul wrote (Ephesians 3:17):
“Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong.”
And as we make room in our hearts for Jesus the Messiah, the Christmas miracle continues!
