1 Peter 3:15: “Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your hope as a believer, always be ready to explain it.”

The photograph shows a picture I painted not long ago, as I was attending a women’s retreat. What moved me was the correlation of freedom and worship. Jesus frees us up to worship. How so?

If the world is revolving around one person only, and this person is oneself then the outcome is narrow-mindedness. Selfishness keeps our world really, really small. Self is quite a dictator and a slave driver too. Think about it: the boundaries of a slave’s world are dictated by the slave owner.  If you are owned by your selfish ego, your worldview is extremely limited because all your opinions are filtered through the lens of your selfishness.  Freedom from this kind of slavery comes with the sobering awareness that it’s not all about you – it’s really all about God! And that’s what Jesus is all about. He came into this world to free us from ourselves. If we have lived longer than a day we probably have noticed we are our own worst enemy.

Here is God’s secret – even though everything we see has His thumbprint on it, even though He owns everything and He is the source of everything, God’s m.o. surprisingly is not all about Him; it’s all about His relations, because He is love. The greatest freedom to discover is to realize that we don’t have to think about ourselves every second of the day….God already does. That frees us up to think about Him, and God’s world is so much bigger than ours!

“I’m free to live, free to give, free to be, I’m free to love You, Lord.” (Song lyrics “Holding Nothing Back” by Martin Smith and Tim Hughes)
