Deuteronomy 6:4-5: “Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength.”

Mankind needs a hearing aid.

There are approximately 1700 references in the Bible for the word “hear”. In comparison, there are around 690 Bible results for the word “love”. This suggests that there’s distance between God and people hindering communication.

God’s message has been spread orally for the longest time until it was written down. The written word is a great invention. Besides hearing the message people are now able to read it too. With Jesus arriving on the scene He added yet another dimension. Better than just reading about God, people could now reach out and touch God by touching His Son. They’d have a conversation with Him. They’d invite Jesus over for dinner.

Jesus brought Heaven to Earth. This was wonderful, but this could not have gone on forever, because Jesus could not have lived on planet Earth forever.

The night before His death, Jesus gathered around Him His closest friends to discuss impending changes. The prospect of losing Jesus deeply disturbed them. When His followers panicked, Jesus explained to them:
You have to let me go and let me finish my mission! If you don’t let me go the Holy Spirit can’t come. Don’t be troubled – I won’t leave you stranded here all by yourself. God’s Spirit will come and explain everything to you.

With Jesus returning to Heaven, an important shift was going to happen: The public attention was turning from Jesus to His followers. Jesus was aware of that, so He reassured them that they were not left to their own devices. They would continue to hear from God through the intervention of the Holy Spirit.

Today God’s Spirit guides us if we invite Him. When we open our hearts to God we basically provide a residential address to the Holy Spirit. As we make room in our hearts for the Spirit of God, He takes up residency and His presence inside of us grows. With heaven inside of us, people around us get to be in touch with heaven. We can hear God’s heartbeat. Now the world around us will too. We are moved by Him. Now the world around us will be moved by the wind of the Spirit, God’s Spirit – the whispering gentle Breath of Heaven.
